Leg Day: Should You Train Heavy or Light?
The importance of training legs cannot be overstated. As I’ve mentioned in previous blogs, working your legs not only builds lower body strength but also stimulates growth hormones that contribute to overall muscle development. But one question that always comes up is: should you train legs with heavy weights and low reps or go for high-rep endurance-based sessions?
There’s always a debate about which approach is better for muscle growth, strength, and endurance. As someone who has been training for over 25 years and has used all forms of training, I can confidently say that both heavy and high-rep leg sessions have their place—whether you’re a bodybuilder, endurance athlete, powerlifter, or just someone looking to build serious lower-body strength.
The Case for Heavy Leg Training
Lifting heavy weights with lower reps can be a real shock to the system, stimulating serious muscle growth. We’ve all felt that deep soreness (DOMS) after an intense heavy leg session. While soreness isn’t the only indicator of a great workout, it’s often a sign that you pushed your muscles beyond their comfort zone. Heavy training is excellent for building raw strength and mass, making it a staple for bodybuilders and powerlifters alike.
The Brutality of High-Rep Leg Days
For those of you who follow me on social media, you’ve probably seen me post about my high-rep leg day sessions—50-rep sets that push the body to its absolute limit. These workouts are brutal, and to be honest, I have a love-hate relationship with them. They demand extreme endurance, mental toughness, and muscular stamina. Because of their intensity, I only do them once every two weeks to allow for full recovery.
So, Which Should You Choose?
The answer is simple: both. If you’re serious about leg development, incorporating both heavy and high-rep sessions will give you the best of both worlds—strength, size, endurance, and overall athletic performance.
Now, go destroy those pins, and I’ll see you in the next blog!
